What is Thanksgiving Day?


Thanksgiving has the English name Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day translated into Vietnamese means Thanksgiving day. It is a national holiday that occurs mainly in the US and Canada.



This holiday is celebrated with the purpose of thanking the American Indians and celebrating the first harvest in the new land. This is a popular holiday and is mentioned by many people in North America, including the US and Canada. Thanksgiving is a later festival that is non-religious but not much of a commercial nature. It's just a holiday and family reunion.


This is a day to celebrate the harvest and give thanks to God for a full and peaceful life. It is also an official holiday, for all statutory workers in the US and Canada. This day is also known as the death day of turkeys. Because turkey is an indispensable food on this Thanksgiving Day - Thanksgiving Day.


The Origin of Thanksgiving Day


In 1620, a group of 120 people of various ages who were persecuted for religion left England. The place they docked is Plymouth, a land of the state of Massachusetts in what is now the United States. At first, they lived quite closed lives for fear of being killed by the Indians. However, severe winters are the leading cause of death. Fortunately, the Indians reached out to help them. They are guided and given land to cultivate. On a day in November 1621, with an unknown date, immigrants and Indians celebrated the harvest in a warm atmosphere.



Thanksgiving Day has been an annual holiday in America since 1863. The first Thanksgiving Day is said to have occurred in 1623 to thank the rain for ending the drought. George Washington, the first president of the United States, declared Thanksgiving an official American holiday in 1789.


This ceremony has only become an important national ceremony in the US since the 19th century. Although before that, the first US president, George Washington, held a national reunification ceremony. However, that tradition was not kept, each region or state organized its own. In the 1800s, Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of a famous women's magazine called "Godey's Lady's Book", campaigned for it to become a national holiday.


The day is a traditional day for family and friends to get together for a special meal. This special meal usually includes turkey, potatoes, blueberry sauce, pumpkin pie, greens… Thanksgiving Day is a holiday for many people to give thanks for what they have. This is also a time for traveling or visiting family and friends.


What day does Thanksgiving take place?


Thanksgiving - Thanksgiving has no fixed date. This date is calculated as follows. Thanksgiving Day will take place on the fourth Thursday of November. Specifically, Thanksgiving Day of 2020 in the US will take place on November 26, 2020.


Note that Thanksgiving in Canada takes place on the second Monday of October. That means Canadian Thanksgiving will take place on October 12, 2020. This day also takes place in other places such as in the Netherlands, Grenada, Liberia, England, etc.
